About The Bocking Arts Theatre
We Love Our Community
The Bocking Arts Theatre was built in 1863 as a gift from the Courtauld family to the people of Braintree, with events being hosted on the site from the 1750’s.
Keeping that tradition going and completely run by volunteers, The Bocking Arts Theatre boast Professional Pantomimes, Braintree Comedy Club, Live Music and many other events. A perfect place to host your party or event.
Built in 1863 this Grade II Listed building was a gift from the Courtauld family to the people of Braintree. The Literary and Mechanics Institute was built on the site of the Great Barn of John English which had hosted plays and pantomimes and visiting speakers since the mid 1750's and was known as the Bocking Theatre. The Institute as it became known locally developed over the years as a major entertainment and community venue in Braintree and in 2011 Braintree District Council handed over responsibility to the Bocking Arts Theatre Trust Registered Charity Number 1143115 and it is today run as a charitable concern with local volunteers and Trustees.
The venue is also available to hire for private functions.
